Charles Bell was an early 19^th-century Scottish surgeon noted for his description of palsy and nerve sensors. He was one of the first physicians make the study of the nervous system a norm within a daily medical practice. His book ‘A System of Dissections’ is filled with his own sketch illustrations depicting human anatomy and surgical operations. This book, and the “Appendix” which appeared later, showcase not only his artistic skills but also his knowledge of surgical operations. “Dissections” served as a demonstration and reference for anatomists and surgeons alike.

This first volume from Bell’s “Appendix to System of Dissections” was published in five separate parts, all of which are included in this tome. Each of the 21 full-page engravings are also included, which is rare considering many of them are often found for sale alone.
