Miguel Venegas was an early 18^th-century Jesuit from Mexico who is primarily remembered for his landmark work on the history of California. “Noticia de la California” was the standard 18^th-century reference on Baja California covering the geography, history, and descriptions of local tribes and indigenous peoples such as the Cochimi. “the first attempt at the history of California… mostly concerns itself with Baja California.

The second volume of the first edition focuses primarily on the first half of the 18^th-century, from 1697-1752 (per Howes). It also covers Jesuit missions throughout Mexico with emphasis on doctrine and missionary journeys.
