1697 Florentine Histories by Machiavelli on the Medici Family & Florence Italy
“Never attempt to win by force what can be won by deception.”
― Niccolò Machiavelli
Machiavelli’s “Florentine Histories” was intended to be a glorification of the Medici family that showed a general history of Europe from the earliest times through the fall of the Western Roman Empire, particularly dealing with the power of the Roman Empire after Gaius Marius’s defeat of the Cimbri people.
Commissioned by Pope Leo X in 1520, this work covers the history of Florence through 1492. Both Pope Leo X and Clement VII sought a tracing of the Medici family – Machiavelli cooperated. This book served as Machiavelli’s reinstatement in Florentine society after falling out of good graces earlier in his lifetime.
This 1697 edition was published as part of the works of Machiavelli, published in Amsterdam by Desbordes – volumes 4 and 5 from the complete works.
