1657 MAGIC 1st ed Apologie by Naude Sorcery Alchemy Occult Demons Agrippa Bacon
Gabriel Naude was a 17th-century French scholar who published works on library sciences. However, his most controversial work was his book ‘Apologie pour tous les grands personages faussement soupçonnez de magie’. More commonly known as ‘Apology for Great Men Suspected of Magic’, this book was Naude’s defense of great philosophers and theologians who were suspected of and condemned for practicing magic and astrology. He defended the work of figures such as Pythagoras, Socrates, Merlin, Thomas Aquinas, and even King Solomon.
In 1625, when ‘Apologie’ was first published, demonic magic and demonism were considered highly heretical. Naude was intending to teach the church how to read the works of these famed figures and how they should learn from them rather than assuming these church and philosophical cornerstones were practicing demonic magic. (Horowitz)
This 1657 London edition was the first edition published in English – an incredibly rare and valuable printing!
