1581 Martin Luther Bible Sermons Lutheran | Black Letter ENGLISH Vautrollier
“I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer.”
― Martin Luther
An exceedingly rare 16th-century English printing of Luther!
Martin Luther is one of the most iconic and well-recognized figures of the Protestant Reformation. His theological teachings, which rejected many of the Roman Catholic Church’s doctrines, were polarizing in the development of Renaissance Protestantism. He translated the Bible into German and added commentary which would influence how the Bible was translated for the next four centuries.
Martin Luther was also an accomplished preacher. He gave hundreds of sermons on a variety of topics, most of which centered on Christ-like living. Even those sermons that attacked Catholicism were rooted in the gospel. This book includes Luther’s attacks on the church selling indulgences in exchange for God’s forgiveness of sin.
Sixteenth-century printings of Luther are rare in and of themselves; however, those printed in English are of utmost scarcity. This London edition was printed in classic blackletter that is commonly associated with early Luther Bibles. These sermons were translated out of the original German by William Gace.
Note on printer: Thomas Vautrollier was a French Huguenot who printed this book without a license and was subsequently fined.
