Giovio, or Paul Jove, was one of the most important historians during the early 16th-century. He was fascinated by Plutarch’s ‘Lives’, so much so that he created his own work which rivaled the ancient masterpiece – “Eulogies of Men”. This work is a collection of biographical sketches of lives of famous men which accounts for recognizable Italian men as well as those involved in the Italian Wars. These works dealt mainly with providing descriptions of royal families such as the House of Visconti and House of Sforza.
This 1558 edition of “Visconti & Sforza” was translated into Italian by Lodovico Domenichi and published by Ferrari in Venice.

- Armorial bookplate – This coat of arms has been attributed to Count Giuseppe Pecchio (1785–1835), an Italian politician, economist, educator, writer, poet, and patriot. While serving in various positions overseeing finance in the Italian government, he developed a liberal political stance and assisted with the 1820 revolution which sought to establish a constitutional monarchy, for which he was exiled.
