1695 Numismatics 1ed Lowndes Silver Coins Great Recoinage Locke English Finance

LOWNDES, William

In 1695, English Secretary to the Treasury, William Lowndes, published a report concerning a proposal to increase the mint prince of silver coins. This proposition was heavily contested especially by John Locke who published his own rebuttal – a view which would be adopted by the English government as the standard for coinage. This event would become known as the Great Recoinage of 1696.

The same is true even today – the atlas volumes offer hundreds and hundreds of illustrated views of ancient coins and medals.

Published in 1730s Paris, this impressive work is a collection of 54 separate engravings depicting coins and medals commemorating King Louis XV of France. Each of the engravings includes a description in a lavish border describing the coin and its purpose. Each of these works of art was done by Fleurimont and was, according to Sarmant, a continuation of the Medals on the events of the reign of Louis XIV.

 

This work is known to be highly valuable and considerably rare!
