1864 – The Color Guard, by James Hosmer | First Edition Louisiana Civil War Account
1864 first edition, Civil War memoir by James K. Hosmer, covering service in Louisiana, Confederate and Union camps, Black troops, and battle conditions.
James Kendall Hosmer was a Civil War-era American historian who is remembered for books on American politics and the development in the American south. One of his best works was ‘The Color-Guard’ which, according to Nevins, is
“an excellent and even-tempered memoir of Army life in Louisiana’.
In it, Hosmer describes Confederate and Union camp life, descriptions and observations of the carnage of war, the role of the negro in various troops, and various strategies used in combat.
