1791 – Africa Voyages of Francois le Vaillant | Beautiful 5 Volume Set, Illustrated | First Edition
First Brussels edition of Le Vaillant’s five-volume African voyage (1791), complete with 34 engraved plates including the suppressed Hottentot woman. A cornerstone of eighteenth-century French exploration literature and natural history.
François Le Vaillant was an 18th-century French explorer known for his descriptions of animals and birds in Africa. In 1780, he began a voyage to the Cape of Good Hope with the Dutch East India Company. While there, he collected various specimens of animals and plants, and encountered local natives, the Hottentot people. From the Cape, he made small voyages including a voyage to the Orange River, Namibia, and South Africa.
This particular 1791 edition of Le Vaillant is notable for including the often extracted and censored ‘Hottentot Woman’ engraving. It also includes the 1797 printing of Le Vaillant’s Second Voyage. A beautiful five-volume set.
