1885 – Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland – Carroll | American Binding, Illustrated
1885 edition of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland featuring forty-two illustrations by John Tenniel, an early Victorian issue of a cornerstone work in English children’s literature.
Lewis Carroll’s landmark masterpiece, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, was first published in 1865. This fascinating fantasy tale of a young girl falling down a rabbit hole, is surely one of the most iconic pieces of literature for all time. It has been adapted into many different versions of film, most notably by Disney in 1951.
A 1885 early American edition of Alice in Wonderland, featuring forty-two of Tenniel’s bizarre, cartoon illustrations. Tenniel’s illustrations are often considered the best of the Alice illustrations.
This particular example is curious in that it is bound in the American edition, red cloth binding featuring a header and gilt title rather than the UK edition, with portrait of Alice.
