“Joy is not in things; it is in us”

Richard Wagner

Richard Wagner’s “Der Ring des Nibelungen” (or “The Ring of the Nibelung, WWV 86) was a landmark work in the history of music. It was a collection of four large-scale operas that created a ‘cycle’ of works which would in-turn be called the “Ring Cycle”. The story loosely follows characters of Norse mythology and was a major influence in J.R.R. Tolkien’s masterpiece “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

This fine, early 20th-century printing was illustrated by the famous Arthur Rackham. This volume contains the final two movements of the work – “Siegfried” and “The Twilight of the Gods” translated by Margaret Armour. The color illustrations are classic Rackham style and feature trolls, beasts, magic spells, and more in a very dark, and sinister fantasy style. In fact, these illustrations are often collected, printed, and sold as a collection of prints without the text!
