Philip Alexander Bruce was a 19^th-century American historian who focused his studies on the history of Virginia. He published the first written history dedicated solely to the history of Virginia as well as other works on various aspects of Virginia including ‘Economic History’. This work covers systems of labor, slavery and servanthood, plantation economy, estate values, manufacturing, and finance.

 

While the economic aspects of this book are important, the main draw of this work is the focus of slavery and slaves in Virginia, beginning in the 17^th-century. Bruce was known to remark on the treatment of slaves including those ‘who had shown an incorrigible disposition to run away had their ears cut off!’ Other important contents include colonial contact made with numerous Native American tribes such as the Wicocomico, Algonquian, and Iroquois.
