1895 Time Machine 1ed HG Wells SciFi Time Travel Space American ed PROVENANCE
“the most important foundation stone of science fiction!” (Anatomy of Wonder)
In 1894 Wells began writing what he called ‘single sitting stories’ using his special knowledge of science, culminating in the publication of his novella The Time Machine in 1895 not only his first novel but also a pioneering highlight of the science fiction genre. Indeed
“once it was published it modified and changed English and American fiction forever. Wells had produced a significant and seminal work. a masterful marriage of the fictive art and theoretical science” (Smith, 46, 50).
It has been adapted into three feature films of the same name, as well as two television versions.
This first American edition was published the same year as the first English edition, 1895. A highly rare and desirable early printing of a classic tale of science fiction!
Of special interest may be the instances of marginalia throughout the novel, which seem to be debating the scientific merits of the story, including a large section detailing the studies of Charles Darwin!
