Much of her early writing was published under the pseudonym ‘Julia Scott.’ She studied and recorded the stories and myths of various ethnic groups in Missouri, including the Musquakie Indians (who made her an honorary tribal member in 1892), emancipated African blacks, and European gypsies. She wrote widely on the culture of blacks in Missouri, and on voodoo practices of ex-slaves. ‘Old Rabbit the Voodoo and other Sorcerers’ is a collection of African-American folk tales; much of the text is written in stereotypical Southern black dialect.
