1891 Red Riding Hood Theatre Color Illustrated Fairy Tale McLoughlin Pantomime
‘Little Red Riding Hood’ is perhaps one of the most famous fairy tales of all time, whose origins are thought to come from the 10th-century. It has been portrayed by both Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm and has gone through countless adaptations and changes.
This 19th-century edition of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ was a picture book published using the inside theater flap format issued by McLoughlin using Dean’s Home Pantomime Toy Books idea for America. The American News Company in 1891 says,
“The cover and the different pages are divided down the center, and as they are lifted, one after the other, fold back to each side, disclosing the stage, and, upon it, a series of tableaux representing scenes in the story, which is told in verses below. On the backs of the covers and the pages, tiers of boxes are depicted, so that, when a book is opened at any page, the whole presents the appearance of a theatre in a strikingly realistic manner.”
This 1891 edition is complete with color illustrations on every page, including the cover boards.
