“A dream is a wish your heart makes”

Disney’s Cinderella

Cinderella’ is one of the most famous and well-known folk tales ever told. It embodies the classic characteristics of fantasy and fairy tale and follows a protagonist that must overcome her unfortunately life circumstances, and, using magic, becomes a beautiful princess. The earliest known examples of a ‘Cinderella’ story come from the 1st century; however, the most popular versions come for Charles Perrault in the late 17th-century and the Brothers Grimm a century later.

This 19th-century edition of ‘Cinderella’ was the first picture book published using this inside theater flap format issued by McLoughlin using Dean’s Home Pantomime Toy Books idea but for America. The American News Company in 1891 says,

“The cover and the different pages are divided down the center, and as they are lifted, one after the other, fold back to each side, disclosing the stage, and, upon it, a series of tableaux representing scenes in the story, which is told in verses below. On the backs of the covers and the pages, tiers of boxes are depicted, so that, when a book is opened at any page, the whole presents the appearance of a theatre in a strikingly realistic manner.”

This 1891 edition is complete with color illustrations on every page, including the cover boards.
