1890 1ed Jefferson Davis Confederate States President Civil War Battles SLAVERY
“A sentimentalized account, including parts which Davis dictated before his death.” (Nevins)
A rare first edition of Mrs. Varina Davis’s account of her husband, Jefferson Davis’s life. This book is an important view into the life in the Confederate States of America, following the American Civil War. This book also includes Davis’s views on African Slave trade as well as the modeling of the Confederate Constitution from the United States Constitution. Other important topics include the Confederate preparation for war, recaps of various battles and skirmishes from the Civil War, CSA presidency, and more.
According to Larned,
“Mrs. Davis’s memoir furnished what her husband’s book greatly lacked: the story of the personal and social life in the Confederate executive mansion. His work was severely controversial: hers is an amiable and vivacious presentation of men, women, and events, drawn with insight and full knowledge. It gives us valuable pictures and telling comments, and must always have high rank in its sphere. No doubt it also reflects in considerable measure Mr. Davis’s own opinions, softened in the presentation.”
Also included with this listing is a 19th century counterfeit T–67 1864 Confederate $20 bill. As the Confederacy could not back up their currency, and since banks could issue their own notes, counterfeiting during this era was prevalent, with numerous and varied notes being interspersed in the South. This replica, produced at the same time as the originals from which it was patterned, incorporates features reminiscent of many other bills from the time period, such as the portrait of Alexander Stephens, the state capitol of Tennessee in Nashville at center, and the “greenback” style typical post-1863.
