1889 HORROR Strange Case of Jekyll & Hyde Robert Lewis Stevenson + Ballantrae
“If I am the chief of sinners, I am the chief of sufferers also.”
― Robert Louis Stevenson, ‘Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’
Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson was a Scottish essayist, poet, and author of fiction and travel books, best known for his novels ‘Treasure Island,’ ‘Kidnapped,’ ‘Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,’ and ‘The Master of Ballantrae’ published in 1889. ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ is one of the most well-known stories of good and evil and the dichotomy between the two.
Originally published serially in Scribner’s Magazine 1888-1889, ‘The Master of Ballantrae’ is a novel in which Stevenson revisits the theme of moral ambiguity that he explored in his 1886 novel ‘Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’. Specifically, it tells the story of James Durie and his younger brother Henry, who took opposing sides in the second Jacobite Rebellion of 1745 and divided their family as a result. After the Master, his father’s favorite son, is presumed a casualty of combat, Henry must assume his older brother’s position in the family and marry his wife, causing the Master to feel cheated and vengeful when he returns to find his younger brother in his place.
This book contains both ‘Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’ and ‘The Master of Ballantrae’ bound in one volume!
