1884 Confederate War Papers General G. Smith SIGNED Battle Seven Pines Civil War
Gustavus Woodward Smith was a Confederate general during the American Civil War, best remembered for his role in the Battle of Seven Pines. When General Joseph Johnson was injured, Smith took over the commanding role until his health deteriorated and Robert E. Lee ultimately took over.
Following the war, Smith published a memoir of his experience in the war. ‘Confederate War Papers’ covers topics including Jefferson Davis’s presidential election, battle tactics and maneuvers, Confederate defenses and forts, and much emphasis on the Battle of Seven Pines. However, according to Nevins,
“Smith was a failure as a general; this work is largely his rationalization for shortcomings at Seven Pines.”
