A rare, 19th century Japanese woodblock print of “Ishiyama”. Ishiyama is an illustrated history of the Ishiyama Hongan-ji War in the 1570s painted by Matsukawa Hanzan, the famous Osaka illustrator. the Ishiyama Hongan-ji War was one of the last battles before Nobunaga united Japan in Osaka. The battle was against Nobunaga’s forces and the Ikki network, a faction of Buddhist warrior monks and peasants opposed to the samurai class. Nobunaga spared many but burnt the fortress to the ground, which is the same site that Toyotomi build the Osaka Castle on in 1583.

 

This rare, history is written in a column handwritten format with furigana for easier reading and includes illustrations of samurai siege battles, castles, court meetings, and more!
