1883 Ancient Ceylon Inscriptions Sinhalese Language Sri Lanka BUDDHISM India
Edward Muller’s ‘Ancient Inscriptions in Ceylon’ is a relatively unknown, but highly rare 19th-century account of the history of the Sinhalese language and vocabulary spoken on the island of Sri Lanka. Muller writes that much of his work comes from Mahanama, the author of ‘Dipavansa’ who originally intended to write on the history of Buddhism in Ceylon; much of the early Sinhalese inscriptions are rooted in Buddhist tradition.
Much of this work is written in the Sinhalese language, transliterated, into the English vernacular.
