The tale is thought to originate from the 1300s in Iceland had went through dozens of editions and languages through the 19^th-century. Esaias Tegner’s Swedish paraphrase in poetic form was popular throughout Europe in the 1820s.

 

This rare Bruckmann edition was translated into German by Otto von Nordenskjöld.
