‘The Republican Manual’ is a fine 19^th-century treatise regarding American politics and the parity between the Republican and Democrat parties. And while this book, on its surface, seems to be a historical account of American government, it was written with the intent to boost the campaign for James Abram Garfield and Chester Alan Arthur’s presidential ticket. It also includes notes on early Republican figures and biographical sketches of Presidential candidates.

There were numerous variants of this scarcely printed work during the Garfield-Arthur campaign, all of which are highly rare. This variant was written and compiled by Eugene Virgil Smalley and published in New York by the American Book Exchange. Due to its scarcity, there are no known recorded copies of this specific printing in any library worldwide.
