Ober sought out new and remarkable species of birds for research and display purposes for the Smithsonian Institute. Traveling for a three year period in the late 1870s in the Caribbean, he discovered 22 new species of birds such as various flycatchers and the Montserrat Oriole.
This fine first edition is beautifully illustrated with 33 full-page engravings of island scenery, birds, and other animals and insects by John Andrew.
