In 1873, Scribner’s published the first authorized edition of Jules Verne’s famous ‘Meridiana’ or ‘Adventures of Three Russians and Three Englishmen in South Africa’. This work, was originally part of Verne’s ‘Extraordinary Voyages.’ However, in 1874, Henry L. Shepard pirated the work and began printing it under a different title, ‘Adventures in the Land of the Behemoth.’ Shepard used sheets from the British edition published by Sampson Low in 1872; and thus, the texts of this edition and the first authorized Scribner translation are significantly different.

Despite its uniquely deceptive origins, this printing remains highly rare and desirable and is often collected in tandem with the 1873 Scribner edition when possible.
