Reynard the Fox has been a staple of fairy tale lore for centuries, with many countries, such as German, France, and other Low Countries, claiming the honor of his ‘birth-place.’ Told as a brute-epic, this tale of cunning mischief was finally written and printed during the late 15^th– and early 16^th-centuries. In fact, some scholars believe the origins of Reynard to have come from the 9^th-century!

 

This undated, 19^th-century edition of ‘Reynard’ is especially famous for its 35 exquisite full-page engravings of the artwork of Heinrich Leutemann. Leutemann was recognized for his illustrations of animals which appeared in various zoological works in the 1850s, unquestionably inspiring publisher A.H. Payne to use Leutemann for this Leipzig edition of ‘Reineke Fuchs’.
