1865 TEXAS Ranger 1ed James Pike Scout Civil War Sherman INDIANS Scalping CSA
James Pike was a 19th-century military officer, known for serving as a Texas Ranger and later as General Sherman’s scout during the Civil War. Pike wrote an important first-hand account of his time as a ranger throughout the Indian Wars and the American Civil War. ‘The Scout and Ranger’ as it is called, contains a rather brutal description of Indian rituals of scalping and cannibalism, as well as a story of his escape from Confederate custody safely to Union lines.
According to Ryan
“This is the narrative of an intrepid Ohio soldier, and illustrates a phase of army life that is as sensational and dangerous as it is useful and necessary. The reliability of the author’s statements and service is certified to by the officers under whose orders he acted.”
