A rare first edition of “Historia de la isla de Cuba” by Pedro Guiteras. The first volume covers a geographical description of Cuba, its topography, character and customs of the aboriginal settlers, agriculture and industry, the discovery of the New World, and the voyages of Christopher Columbus, and ends with the taking and occupation of Havana by the English in 1762 to 1763. The second volume ends in the government of Tacón in 1838. The first volume managed to circulate in Cuba, but the colonial authorities banned the second, in which Guiteras issued judgments contrary to absolutist governments. It was still popular as represented by the famous Cuban essayist Fernando Ortiz remarks,

There is no other history of Cuba, which, like that of Guiteras, could best represent the Cuban ideology of its time, constituting a strong plea for the freedom of this nation …. Guiteras brought to light forgotten facts, which his ancestors believed to be infertile or overly significant; took the historical studies of Cuba beyond the simple external chronicle of events often inconsequential, for the first time in Cuban historiography, the development of our people was intimately linked with the rest of world life “.
