1863 Opera Singers Queens of Song Female Classical Music Prima Donna Portraits
“Queens of Song” was Ellen Clayton’s most notable and popular biographical work. First published in 1863, this work sketches the lives of notable female operatic singers such as Elizabeth Billington, Giuditta Pasta, Maria Felicita Malibran, Giulia Grisi, Clara Novello, and Pauline Garcia. These women were famous 19th-century vocalists who appeared in 19th-century European operas. According to Cowgill,
“‘Queens of Song’ represents one of the earliest attempts to account for the collective contributions of opera’s prima donnas.” (p.xxviii)
To this point in history, female opera roles were predominantly portrayed by castrati male performers. Clayton attempted to collect and promote the female roles being portrayed by women, or the prima donna.
