1862 Volcano Geology Volcanology Vesuvius Eruption Pompeii Illustrated Scrope
The earliest systematic treatise on volcanology!
George Scrope was a 19th-century English geologist known for his studies and surveys on volcanoes and volcanic regions in France. As a young adult, he took a special interest and fascination in Mounts Vesuvius and Etna while he lived in Naples. He personally witnessed the 1822 Venusian eruption which sparked a lifelong love of volcanism. After studying volcanoes for a few years, he published ‘Considerations on Volcanos’, which was solely responsible for establishing new geological theories on the Earth.
Reissued and retitled multiple times following the initial release, ‘Volcanos’ is
“regarded as the earliest systematic treatise on volcanology and the first attempt to frame a … theory of volcanic action and … show the part volcanoes have played in the Earth’s History.” (EB, 2008)
