John S.C. Abbott was a 19th-century American historian who wrote works on a variety of topics including the French Revolution, the Civil War, and the military and political history of Napoleon Bonaparte. The latter, ‘The History of Napoleon Bonaparte’, is a detailed account of Napoleon’s rise the power and eventual fall. However, throughout the work, Abbott accurate describes aspects of the Napoleonic Wars with use of maps to aid in the information. Curiously, Abbott seems to glorify Napoleon throughout this book and show favor to his military exploits.

Although he was an inductee of the Baseball Hall of Fame and he was sometimes referred to as a “father of baseball,” the importance of his role in the development of the game has been disputed.
      • Following nearly two decades of controversy, invention of America’s “national game” of baseball was attributed to Abner Doubleday by the Mills Commission (1905–1907).
