Walter Colton, a naval chaplain and historian, published an important book of California history entitled “Three Years in California.” It was first published in 1850 and describes in detail his experiences living in California at the end of the 1840s. This is significant in that ‘Three Years’ provides a description of California prior to the height of the Gold Rush; and, according to many Gold Rush experts, this book is the principal description of California prior to the Gold Rush.
