1858 Japanese Beautiful Women Samurai Tokugawa Bakufu Ukiyoe Gesaku Illustrated

 

A rare, 19^th century Japanese woodblock print of “Kinsei Bijinroku” an ukiyo-e graphic novel often called kusazoshi. Written by famous gesaku artist, Santo Kyozan, one of the many pen names of Iwase Momoki. Kyozan’s works were affected by the shifting publication laws of the Kansei Reforms aimed at punishing writers and publishers for writings related to the Yoshiwara or anything considered “harmful to society” at the time by the Tokugawa Bakufu.

 

This volume of Kinsei Bijinroku is written in a column woodblock print format with furigana for easier reading with illustrations throughout and color illustrations on the covers in the classic 2 volume print where the covers come together to make a single image.
