1858 History of Frederick the Great Thomas Carlyle Friedrich II Prussia Germany
A scarce 19th-century six-volume printing of Thomas Carlyle’s historical biography of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia entitled, ‘History of Friedrich II.’ Frederick the Great has long been considered the foremost King of Prussia, notable for his 46-year reign. He served and ruled over Brandenburg-Prussia and was a significant force in the Wars of Polish and Austrian Succession.
Victorian-era Scottish writer and historian, Thomas Carlyle, was a tremendously influential author. However, this historical work and its subject, Frederick the Great, is most famous for being beloved by Adolf Hitler and Joseph Goebbels. They viewed Frederick the Great as Adolf Hitler’s predecessor and highly valued Carlyle’s emphasis of Frederick as a “singular great hero,” a similar view the Nazi’s held for Hitler as their sole “Fuhrer.” This beautiful 6-volume set is illustrated with numerous maps, as well as engraved frontispieces in each volume.
