Zerah Colburn was a 19^th-century American engineer who is best known for his designs to the steam locomotive and railway systems. He was regularly employed to collaborate with other engineers to explore improvements to American and European trains. One such work was ‘The Permanent Way’ in which Colburn and Alexander Holley discussed coal-burning locomotives and how they impacted train economy and the railway industry.

This 1858 first edition contains numerous full-page illustrations depicting parts of the locomotive and rails along with charts and diagrams for the authors’ research.
