For hundreds of years, the Scots and the English had a continuing border skirmish over who would control more of Britain. In the fourteenth century, many battles were fought, however, without the help of Jean Froissart’s ‘Chronicles,’ most of these battles would have been forgotten. The Battle of Otterburn, which took place in 1388, is best recorded in Froissart’s famous record, which includes interviews of important figures from both sides of the battle.

Relatively little has been printed on such a battle, but this first edition by Robert White includes a folding map and figures throughout depicting various aspects of the war including distances to and from Newcastle to Otterburn, as well as aftermath of the battle. The land in question was a popular hunting territory, and wanted to be occupied by both sides. After the war, several ballads, or songs, were composed to remember the battle – “The Battle of Otterburn” and the “Ballad of Chevy Chase,” however, these tunes conflict with each other on the actual history of the battle.
