“An objective look at the Mormons of Utah as well as with a scientific appraisal of the resources and fauna and flora of this section of the Great Basin.”

– Brigham D. Madsen, on “An Expedition”

This work, “An Expedition of Utah” was Howard Stansbury’s account of his voyage to the American West. On this journey, he spent time with Brigham Young. While the purpose of the work was chiefly scientific, Stansbury discovered much about the Mormon people and included both scientific findings and Mormon life in his work. In turn, this book would become the first significant description published on the Mormon settlement in Utah. Stansbury writes in his introduction,

“In what has been said respecting the Mormon community, I have endeavored frankly to present the impressions produced upon my mind by a somewhat intimate acquaintance of a year’s duration with both rules and people.”

This book also discusses the practices of polygamy and the dynamics of the Mormon community.

In addition to the Mormon information, Stansbury writes profusely about scientific discoveries such as animals and geological oddities, as well as travel hardships and use of the Oregon Trail.
