1855 Japanese Samurai 47 Ronin Chushingura Illustrated Woodblock Print 4v SET
An interesting 19th century Edo woodblock-print of the ‘Akō incident’ is a Chushingura tale written by Yamazaki, Yoshinari illustrated by famous Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hashimoto Gyokuran. Chūshingura is the name of fictionalized accounts of the historical event concerning the 47 ronin and the mission to avenge the death of their master, Asano Naganori, which has been told in kabuki, bunraku, stage plays, films, novels, and television shows ranking among the most popular of all historical stories in Japan. This story regained popularity with the 2013 film starring Keanu Reeves, ‘47 Ronin.’
“Yamazaki narrated the course of the Akô Incident and then proceeded to biographies of all of the 47 Rônin. Although similar in structure to the works of Muro Kyûsô and Katajima Shin’en over a century earlier, it was far more accessible, and incorporated many of the countless new anecdotes that had been added to the Chûshingura repertoire by kôdan storytellers over the previous half-century. Yamazaki followed up with a sequel Akô gishi zuihitsu one year later…describing artifacts of the Akô rônin.” (Donald Keene Center of Japanese Culture)
This rare 1855 first edition is written in the typical column handwritten format with furigana usage for easier reading with excellent black and white double page illustrations by Hashimoto Gyokuran of spears, swords, arrows, axes, banners, maps, scenery, samurai in full battle dress, tombstones, and much more!
