- Dulany ran the family’s plantation in Fauquier County, Virginia while her husband Henry Dulany was serving in the war with the 6th Virginia Cavalry Regiment, Company A.
- The diary’s fame is attributed to the high volume of entries that record in great detail plantation life and ongoing news of the war.
- According to the Library of Virginia (the diary’s curator)” “…topics covered include domestic responsibilities and social encounters, increasing deprivation, news of distant battles and eyewitness reports of fighting in the neighborhood, and the vandalism and plunder of her home by successive raiding parties of Union soldiers in the late winter of 1864.”
