The most important source of the Astor adventure!” (Howes)

Gabriel Franchere was a Canadian explorer best known for his voyages of the Pacific Northwest. Employed out of Montreal and the Pacific Fur Company, Franchere spent time exploring all over Canada and helped establish the first American settlement in the Canadian Pacific (i.e. Winnipeg) as part of the famed Astor expedition. His Northwest voyage through the Rocky Mountains gained popularity throughout the 19th-century after author Washington Irving used Franchere as the basis for his book ‘Astoria’.

Franchere published a book of his discoveries and experiences – ‘Narrative of a Voyage to the Northwest Coast of America’. This 1854 first English edition was translated by Jebediah V. Huntington who claims that this book is,

“the only account by an eye witness and a participator in the enterprise, of the first attempt to form a settlement on the Pacific under the Stars and Stripes.”

This book is also one of the best accounts of Native American Indian tribes in Canada. According to field, this book is

“the earliest narrative of adventure among the Indians of the Pacific Coast, descriptive of their manners and peculiarities.”

Larned includes a note:

“Chapter 4 contains an interesting description of the Mississippi River, and a footnote supplies a translation of Louis XV’s order giving up [possession of] Louisiana to Spain”.
