- Samuel A. Verdery was a second-lieutenant for the 17th Alabama Infantry for the Confederate States during the American Civil War. The unit was mustered into service in 1861, seeing combat in the battles of Shiloh, Nashville, Franklin, and Bentonville. The regiment sustained particularly heavy losses in 1864 after it joined the Army of Tennessee. Verdery himself passed away due to illness in a field hospital in February 1865, just a few months before the unit surrendered at Greensboro in April.
