Mann being an attorney, state senator, anti-slavery Congressman, is most remembered as an education reform. As the first Secretary of the Massachusetts Board of Education, he did much to improve the quality of public education in the state. He served as an anti-slavery Whig in Congress from 1848-1853. This compilation includes a letter written to answer Webster’s attack on Mann’s legal knowledge of the technicalities of the Fugitive Slave Law.
