An interesting Edo woodblock-print of the classic folk tale ‘Jiraiya Goketsu Monogatari,’ which was published from 1839 to 1868 in novel form with many famous artists providing illustrations including Kunitsuna and Kunitsuna II. Utagawa Kuniteru II was a print designer, painter and book illustrator in Edo.  He studied under Utagawa Kunitsuna I, eventually calling himself Kunitsuna II. This is volume 25 continuing the tale of Jiraiya, his love Tsunade, and nemesis Oroshimaru. Jiraiya is heir of the mighty Ogata clan in Kyūshū and a ninja who shapeshifts into a gigantic toad. Tsunade is a beautiful young maiden who had mastered slug magic, and Yashagorō, later known as Orochimaru, who was his one-time follower, now his archenemy, is a master of serpent magic. These characters received new international attention with inclusion in the manga and anime series ‘Naruto’ of characters of the same name and abilities.

This rare edition is written in a column handwritten format. This edition contains excellent illustrations throughout of different scenes from Jiraiya!
