“Of all things to which the people owe their lives the rites are the most important…”

-Confucius

A 19th century Sino-Japanese woodblock printing of the Book of Rites from the ritual section of the 5 classics of Confucian Cannon bound in the fukurotoji style.

“This collection of texts describes the social forms, administration, and ceremonial rites of the Zhou dynasty as they were understood in the Warring States and the early Han periods. The Book of Rites is a diverse collection of texts of varied but uncertain origin and date, lacking the overall structure found in the other “rites” texts… some sections consist of definitions of ritual terms, particularly those found in the Etiquette and Ceremonial, while others contain details of the life and teachings of Confucius…It has, however, taken a higher position… forming on of the ‘five king,’ which are acknowledged as the books of the greatest authority in China.” (Legge)

This undated edition of the Book of Rites from the 5 classics of Confucian is written in the typical column format with minor furigana usage for Japanese readers!
