Mary Randolph was a descendent of Pocahontas and related, through marriage, to Thomas Jefferson. In 1825, Mary Randolph capitalized on her cooking skills and published one of the best-known cookbooks of the nineteenth century, ‘The Virginia House-Wife.’ She sent a copy to Thomas Jefferson who thanked her for the book, writing that it was

“one of those which contribute most to the innocent enjoyments of mankind … a greater degree of merit few classes of books can claim.”

 

Manuscript cookbooks kept by Jefferson’s granddaughters reveal that Mrs. Randolph was the source of over forty dishes that were served at Monticello, including catfish soup and floating island. This 1848 edition of ‘The Virginia Housewife’ was published in Philadelphia.
