Sir Edward Belcher was a British Naval admiral known for commanding the HMS Samarang in the Royal Navy. Belcher wrote a narrative reporting on the voyages of the Samarang noting the action of the First Opium War and a survey missions near Borneo.
This 1848 printing is the first edition of a classic account of surveying the Far East. According to Hill,
“The determination of the British government to survey the approaches to ports laid open by the new treaty with China led to this expedition. Extensive accounts are given of Singapore, Borneo, Hong Kong, Macao, the Philippine Islands, Celebes, the Moluccas, Formosa, the Ryukyu Islands, Quelpert Island of Korea, and Japan”
This incredible and beautiful set is filled with impressive full-page engravings, many of which are colored. Illustrations depict city views, portraits of South Asian leaders, shipwrecks, maps, and indigenous people.
