1847 1ed Notes on Iroquois Schoolcraft Indian Tribes Native American Illustrated
“the most reliable observations that had been made among various tribes…pertaining to almost every field of American ethnology.” (Larned)
Henry Rowe Schoolcraft was an early American ethnologist and expert on Native American culture. He was well-known for his Congress-commissioned study on United States Indian tribes beginning in 1851.
This work ‘Notes on the Iroquois’ is the popular publishing of his official report to the secretary of state on his Indian census, for which Field notes about the official census,
“This is perhaps the most valuable of Mr. Schoolcraft’s works, having been executed after personal examination in an official capacity of all the tribes inhabiting New York.” (Field)
Though his popular publishing was met with some critique, it includes information on the Schoolcraft’s original notes and abstract of his census, Indian Cosmogony, history of the Iroquois compared with their present, wars with other native tribes, archeology, language, art, and much more!
This 1847 first edition by Erastus features 2 color plates of Pocahontas and King Hendrick, and numerous in-text woodcut engravings!
