The HMS Éclair was a ship in the Royal Navy which is most notably remembered for carrying infection and disease to the Cape Verde Islands. The ship, which was in service for many years, only went by the name ‘Éclair’ for two years, 1844-45, after which it was renamed Rosamund.

 

This 1846 report was published to inform the English public of the yellow fever epidemic outbreak on the Éclair. It also includes a map of the Cape Verd Islands, a map of the island of Boa Vista in the Cape de Verds, and a letter of correspondence to and from notable figures discussing the fever.
