Colton maps are often considered the very best of 19^th-century maps. Known for their accuracy and attention to detail, Colton maps have maintained their desirability even into the 21^st-century. One of Colton’s less-known maps was his map of West Point and its environs. This map appears in “A Guide Book to West Point” which has become one of the best and most important pre-Civil War descriptions of West Point.

 

This 1844 first edition is incredibly rare and highly desirable, much in part to the inclusion of the impressive folding map!

  • Saron Phillips was the minister at Wesleyan Methodist Church in Seneca Falls, New York from 1843-1849, at a time when the congregation was known for pushing for various social reforms such as abolition and women’s rights. The church was the site of the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention, the first women’s rights convention, where about 300 people gathered to hear Elizabeth Cady Stanton demand the right of women to vote. Phillips is listed as both an attendee to the convention and a signer of the Declaration of Sentiments (one of only 32 men to do so), alongside such notable figures as Frederick Douglass, Lucretia Mott, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton.
