François-Joseph Moreau was a French physician during the first half of the 19^th-century who primarily practiced gynecology and midwifery. He published an important treatise regarding pregnancy and childbirth, a medical work that has long been a staple in the portfolio of OBGYN physicians. This 1844 English edition of ‘Practical Treatise on Midwifery’ was translated out of the original French by Thomas Betton and includes an impressive collection of full-page engravings. These lithographic illustrations depict the birth canal, fetuses, surgical tools, and female and infant anatomy.

According to ‘Heirs of Hippocrates’,

“Moreau was physician to the Maternite for the greater part of his career and served as obstetrician to the princesses of the Orleans family. The plates were redrawn by S. Cichowski and lithographed by P. S. Duval of Philadelphia.”
